Mental health support services in the UK



Mental health is just as important as physical health, but it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. In the UK, there are a number of mental health support services available, both through the NHS and from independent charities and organizations.


NHS mental health services

Your GP is your first point of contact for most mental health problems. They can assess your needs and refer you to specialist services if necessary.

NHS mental health services include:

  • Community mental health teams (CMHTs) provide support and treatment for people with a range of mental health problems.

  • Mental health hospitals provide inpatient care for people with severe mental health problems.

  • Crisis resolution and home treatment teams (CRHTs) provide support and treatment for people who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

There are also a number of mental health charities and organizations that offer support and services in the UK. Some of the most well-known include:

  • Anxiety UK

  • Young Minds

  • Samaritans

These charities and organizations offer a range of services, including:

  • Helplines and online chat support

  • Information and advice

  • Support groups and peer support

  • Therapy and counseling

How to find mental health support

If you are struggling with a mental health problem, there are a number of ways to find support. You can:

  • Talk to your GP

  • Contact a mental health charity or organization

  • Search online for mental health support in your area

It is important to remember that you are not alone. There are many people who care about you and want to help.

Here are some additional tips for finding mental health support in the UK:
